Reduction in IEPS for Regular Gasoline and Diesel

The Ministry of Finance announced that, from January 11 to 17, regular gasoline and diesel will receive a subsidy in the Special Tax on Production and Services of over 10%.

What justifies the subsidy? What is the price of gasoline? In the case of regular gasoline, the savings per liter will be 14.4%, while for diesel, the subsidy will reach 12.92%. Premium gasoline will not receive this support, as published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF). Therefore, consumers will pay 5.5257 pesos per liter for regular gasoline, after a discount of 0.9298 pesos; while diesel will be sold at 6.1783 pesos per liter, with a subsidy of 0.9163 pesos. The federal government, through the Ministry of Finance, implements these subsidies to mitigate the impact of rising international oil prices and other energy costs. However, by offering larger discounts, it affects the country’s tax revenue. As of December 10, the national average price for regular gasoline was 24.263 pesos per liter, Premium was at 25.563 pesos, and diesel was selling at an average of 26.018 pesos per liter.

These subsidies are a government tool to ease the pressure on consumers faced with fluctuations in the international market, but they also present a challenge for tax collection. It is crucial for citizens to be aware of these measures, as they may impact their personal finances and the country's overall economic growth. Additionally, there could be a search for long-term energy alternatives, which may result in changes in fuel consumption.
